This was THE bike. I picked this out at the beginning of the summer, 1984. I mowed lawns and worked all summer to save up the $200 for this bike. I remember looking at the picture everyday to keep me motivated. Couldn’t believe it, soon after I bought it, it was stolen… bummer. 🙂

I feel your pain. I had a 500a, limited edition, all chrome. Sweet ride. In 85 it was stolen. No other bike could replace it.

My parents bought me a white 1984 500A back in 1984 when I graduated elementary school (6th grade) I was 11 years old. Raced the bike and won a few trophies in beginners class lol….the bike was stolen in may 1985 at the front door of a yamaha dealer, I was checking out the new white/red 1985 yamaha YZ 80. My friend took his CW racing bike into the dealer and I left my 500A at the entrance door. That same year my Suzuki RM80 was stolen ! ….urghhhh I hate California and I hope the people that stole my 500A and my RM80 crash and break their necks !!!

I had a 1983 RM80 and an 84 YZ80. I remember when they went to white/red in 85. Eddie hicks won just about every 80 expert race he entered on one of those. I moved up to 125’s that year. The guy I practiced with and my close friend for years was the younger brother of the guy gracing the cover of that issue of bmx action, Keith gaynor. I wore his old GT bmx pants the first time I raced that 83 RM80. I think I finished dead last! But MAN, did I look cool! Good times…

I got my 500a for Christmas in 84… I was living in Houston,TX then… I loved it and would love to find another one. We moved to Alabama in 85 and it was stolen from Walmart in 87…. I still think of it as price less…

Waw this brings me lot’s of memories,I am from ARUBA ( Dutch Island in the Caribbean) I remember I saw and ad in the BMX magazine back than and I fall in love with the Redline 500a in Chrome but the problem was that we only have on bike store on the Island and they only sell Haro, Hutch and GT Bmx bikes. I looked at the picture every day and only talked about the bike the hole time. Since I was 14 years old I went to the Store with my 18 year brother and ask to speak with the Manager to try to convince them to order one for me but since this was a different brand they never heard of it back than they refused. But i kept going to the store every other day and i didn’t give up till i have convince them and after 5 to 6 months later they ordered one for me. The Store made me a deal that I have to leave the Bike in the Store for display at least 3 months and I agree which was good anyways because it cost me almost $400.00 and i needed time to come up with cash ( Car Washing and raking leaves in Neighbors Yards, Hahahah), boy i was happy, that’s how Redline Bike’s were introduced to my country, every body liked it and they started to order them like crazy, So I had the first Redline in Aruba, that bike was the most awesome bike i had.

I still have my 1984 redline 500a in great condition. I was 9 years old when I got it. I rode it everywhere until I turned 16. In college I dusted it off and rode it to class. I love the 500a. I put on cw bars, odyssey six bolt neck, odyssey lay back seat post, and odyssey flip down pegs. (any one remember these). I also put on a odyssey bear claw brake, all done in 1984. I still have the original parts. I love the old days of BMX it was nice to see other people have fond memories of their 500a. As a kid I named mine renegade. My son who is 3 1/2 will some day be riding the 500a. Mine is the full chrome version. Even the stickers are in great shape, this was a well built bike, god knows how many miles are on it. I remember all the bikes in the neighborhood, mongoose, schwinn predator, Hutch, Haro, Team Murry, and GT, but everyone gave respect to the redline, I was so proud of that bike. My older brother had the same bike, but it got stolen. Mine survives in all its 1984 glory. I also had a crush on the redline PL20, that was the one bike that had me beat in the hood.

Wow, this reads like my childhood… had kids with those same bikes in my neighborhood. I wish I could get back my 500a for my son to ride!

I just found my cousin’s ’84 Redline 500A in my aunt’s garage – she was going to throw it out. It was so covered in grime, I didn’t know what it was, so I planned on cleaning it up and giving it to one of my daughters. As soon as I started cleaning it and saw the deep, rich chrome, I knew this was a keeper – sorry kids! It’s barely used, with the OEM rear tire buzzed down to the cords and and the original brake cable broken, which is probably what side-lined it around 1986 or so. It’s sat since. I’m going to replace the rear tire with a decent one, already fixed the cable, and I’m thinking of putting a chrome chain on it. It cleaned up very well and there are no scratches or dings in the frame or fork. Lightly used. I’m stoked. At 45 years old, this is one of the bikes we all lusted for in the day.
I stumbled across this website doing research on the bike. It’s good to know others are into ’em as well. -
I still have mine. I peeled the stickers of back in the 80’s for the all chrome look. Just had a guy at work offer me $200 for it. Don’t know if I want to sell it though.

I just dug mine out of my parents basement where its been sitting for 2 decades. I tried to sell it at a garage sale about 15 years ago, but for some reason my mom wouldnt let me. At the time I thought it was odd, but I sure am glad. Im gonna restore it back to its former 4th grade glory!

Oh yeah! I just scored a crazy looking frame that has a two-tube top bar. It has “redline” stamped on the bottom bracket. Did I come up or did I purchase the “pinto” model?
